Handshake is Loyola University Chicago’s online career services platform. Handshake can be used to search for and apply to on-campus positions, internships, and entry-level jobs; schedule career advising appointments; access career resources (including the Arrupe Resume Guide & Outline); register for career fairs and events; and much more.

PathwayU is a career exploration tool that can support you in understanding how your academic and career interests align. Visit luc.pathwayu.com to create your account, take career assessments, and explore careers.

“What Can I Do With This Major?” connect majors to a variety of career options and shares strategies to make you a more marketable candidate for the types of careers you want to pursue. You can access this resource under “More Career Tools” on the LUC Career Services website.

ACUNI 103: Career Exploration & Attainment is an elective course that introduces the skills needed for career discernment and job search navigation. All Arrupe students are eligible to enroll in the 0-credit course, which is offered every spring semester.

LUC Career Communities help you explore careers and learn about programs, events, and work opportunities related to your interests. Each career community is led by a LUC career advisor who is an expert in that area, which allows you to receive even more specialized career advising based on your specific career interests.

Log in to Handshake, navigate to 'My Career Interests' in the top right corner, and check the boxes for the career communities you would like to explore as well as the industries that interest you. Once completed, you will start to receive timely announcements from that community’s career advisor through Handshake.

Not sure where to start? Schedule an in-person or virtual meeting with Sarah McNally (Click Career Advising for Arrupe College Students - Internship and Job Search for Arrupe students). Sarah’s office is 224 Maguire Hall.

You can also meet with Career Services during Chips, Dips, & Internships on Thursdays from 12:45 - 2:15pm in the Maguire Hall lobby, where you can stop by for snacks and drop-in career support without making an appointment.

Arrupe College is committed to supporting all students’ career development, regardless of citizenship or immigration status. Undocumented students can face unique challenges in their career journeys, and students are encouraged to meet with career advisors to discuss options and opportunities that are available to you.

The LUC UndocuCareer Guide provides information and resources for undocumented students navigating the job search process. It shares recommendations on income generation, paid fellowship opportunities, entrepreneurship resources, legal support organizations, and more.

Networking with professionals is an excellent way to learn about different career paths and get connected to job and internship opportunities. Start networking with:

• Arrupe Career Chats, which take place on Tuesdays from 1:00-2:00pm in the Maguire Hall lobby. Stop by for a conversation about various career topics with professionals.
• Information tables and events, which bring employers to campus throughout the semester to connect with students and share information about job and internship opportunities.
• LoyolaLinked is a networking and mentorship platform for Loyola students and alumni.
• CareerSpring (passcode: ARRUPECOLL), a networking and internship resource for first-generation students.

An internship is a professional work and learning experience related to your career interests and/or field of study that enables you gain skills and experience related to your career goals. Participating in an internship can help you apply the knowledge and skills you are learning in the classroom at Arrupe in a professional setting.

While some internships can be unpaid, the majority of internships shared with Arrupe students are paid work experiences. Internships are typically held for a set period of time and can take place during the summer, over the course of a semester, or throughout the academic year. On-campus jobs and Federal Work Study

Federal Work-Study (FWS) is a federal grant awarded to qualifying students as a part of their Financial Aid Package. It is earned by working a job designated as a FWS position, which can be either on campus or at a local nonprofit through Loyola’s community-based work-study program. Use the “Work Study” filter on the Handshake Jobs page to find and apply for these positions, and learn more in the Student Employment Guide.

Not all on-campus jobs require FWS eligibility. Use the “On-Campus” Handshake filter to find and apply for positions on the Water Tower and Lake Shore campuses.

Additionally, students can apply to work at Arrupe College in a variety of positions. Most of the applications for these positions open in the late spring or early summer for the following academic year. Positions at Arrupe College include:

Arrupe LEAD Career Fellowship

The LEAD Career Fellowship is an 8-week, paid career exploration program offered in the fall and spring semesters that helps students gain career skills, build their professional networks, and get connected to Chicagoland employers. Students apply to be placed in a company or organization and learn about what it’s like to work there through completing projects, job shadowing, and meeting with professionals on Wednesdays throughout the semester. Students receive a $500 stipend for participating in the program, and work authorization is not required to participate.

Avoid Job Scams

In recent semesters, LUC has seen a significant increase in phishing attempts targeting our community. Phishing is a deceptive practice where attackers pose as trusted entities to steal sensitive information, such as sending emails to students from a spoofed LUC email account advertising a job. Recent examples include scammers sharing a part-time, remote “personal assistant” position that pays $400-600 weekly.

• If you receive an email about a job that seems suspicious, ask yourself:
• Does it request that I respond by text or from my non-Loyola email?
• Does it ask for bank, credit card, or other personal information?
• Does it warn about a problem with my account or threaten consequences for not responding (such as terminating your account within 24 hours)?
• Does it have multiple spelling & grammar errors? Does this job seem too good to be true?
